Council of the Swiss Abroad (CSA)

Elected Council Member for Australia for the term 2017-2021:

KATJA WALLIMANN GATES  QLD

Ever since arriving in Australia in 1994, I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the Swiss Community in Queensland. Volunteering in a range of community activities gives me great satisfaction:

  • Member of Swiss Society of Queensland and Swiss Yodel Choir since 1995, Secretary in 2009 and President since 2010
  • Editor of Swiss News Queensland for four years
  • Initiating the Swiss-German Mothers’ Group in 1999

I am always interested in hearing the stories of Swiss who arrived in the decades before me. Likewise, I do whatever I can to help Swiss visitors and help new arrivals settle into their lives here.

I have always been interested in politics, which is why after my Biology studies I also undertook studies in Swiss Law for 3 years. I have a solid understanding of Science, Education and Law in both Switzerland and Australia and seek to expand my active involvement through international networking in these areas.

I attended the inaugural Swiss Presidents’ Meeting held in Geneva as well as the subsequent Congress of the Swiss Abroad in 2015 and was elected as a member of the Council of the Swiss Abroad in 2017.

 Job: Homemaker, Biologist
